Parenting Style Affect Child Development among Different Ethnicities of Muslim Children in the United States

Marquette University, 2013 Parenting styles create different social environments in the life of children at home. Countless research can be found about parenting styles, such as, parenting associated with child behavior and cross-cultural parenting (Keels, 2009; Paulussen-Hoogeboom, Stams, Hermanns, Peetsma, & Wittenboer, 2008). However, there is a lack of research about parenting style and religion, especially parenting among Muslim families, and it is difficult to know Muslim parenting practices across the country. Along the same line, there is a lack of research that provides a balanced look at the effects of the four parenting styles (ie; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and neglectful) on child development. Most scholars focus on authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles in their studies and disregard the permissive and neglectful parenting styles (Mayseless, Scharf, & Sholt, 2003; Takeuchi & Takeuchi, 2008). Therefore, the main focus of this current study is to look at the development of Muslim children’s emotions, thinking, and behavior from different ethnicities and from different parenting styles. The researcher also discussed how the existing literature corresponds with the parenting style framework that was developed by Baumrind in 1967. Focus was given to the parenting style model by Baumrind since her model is often used by the researchers in parenting studies. Finally, the researcher provided a cross cultural study by using the survey design methods to investigate the parenting style among Muslim children from different ethnicity in the United States. Anticipated results and limitations are also discussed.
